Georg Karl Pfahler

Georg Karl Pfahler (1926–2002), a German artist, developed a form of painting in which block-like forms evolved, around 1962, into areas of colour with sharply defined contours. His training took him from the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, where he studied in 1948–1949, to the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, which he attended until 1954. During his student years, he worked mainly in ceramics; after becoming an independent artist, he increasingly turned to painting. From 1958, the term “formativ” appeared in the titles of his paintings, naming a concept he chose to include in their titles.
His career also involved collective practice: in 1956, he founded gruppe 11 with Günther C. Kirchberger. In 1970, he was selected, together with Thomas Lenk, Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker, to represent Germany at the Venice Biennale; in 1981, he was selected again to represent German art at the São Paulo Biennial. In 1985, the Kunsthalle Mannheim devoted the exhibition “G. K. Pfahler – neue Bilder” to him. Two solo exhibitions are recorded in 2001: one at the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, the other at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.
Alongside his artistic activity, Pfahler taught: after serving as a visiting lecturer at Helwan University in Cairo in 1981, he joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg from 1984 to 1992. From 1982, he also taught at the Internationale Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst in Salzburg. In 1999, he was commissioned to design the conference room of the Council of Elders in the German Reichstag building.
