Ignaz Gaugengigl

Born : 1855Died : 1932Documented citizenships : Germany

Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl, also referred to as Ignaz Gaugengigl, was a painter and engraver, born in 1855 and died in 1932. Born in Bavaria and described as Bavarian-American, he is associated with Boston, where he is described as a painter. His work includes scenes of daily life, often set in Revolutionary-era France.

He also translates some of his oil paintings into etchings; according to the source, the process offers him additional creative possibilities in working on the compositions. The Amateur (1882) and Scherzando (1903) are oils on panel, while Summer (1880) is an etching on paper. Portraiture forms another aspect of his practice: Portrait of James G. Freeman, painted in oil on panel in 1899, is one example; West Boston – Cambridge Bridge, dated 1921, is also among the documented works. Gaugengigl receives numerous commissions for portraits of members of Boston’s elite.

The Flagler Museum organized Masterfully Human: The Art of Gaugengigl, described as the first museum exhibition devoted to the artist. It brought together 75 works. Scherzando is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where it entered the collection as a gift from Robert Jordan, from the collection of Eben D. Jordan. On the Promenade (c. 1881) belongs to the Brooklyn Museum, following its gift from George D. Pratt.
