Gaston Bussière

Born : 1862Died : 1928Documented citizenships : France

Gaston Bussière, a French painter and illustrator born in Cuisery in 1862 and deceased in Saulieu in 1928, developed a practice in which painting and literary illustration went hand in hand. His training combined an apprenticeship with his father, a decorative painter, drawing classes taken in Mâcon in 1878–1879, and then studies at the École des beaux-arts de Lyon and in Paris, in the studios of Alexandre Cabanel and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes.

Awarded the Prix Marie Bashkirtseff in 1884, he began exhibiting at the Salon the following year. In 1890, he presented La Gloire (Orphée), an oil painting on canvas, at the Salon des Artistes Français; the work is recorded as deposited from Pont-de-Vaux at the Musée des Ursulines. Close for a time to Joséphin Péladan, he took part in the Salon de la Rose-Croix between 1893 and 1895.

His work as an illustrator accompanied texts of varied kinds: Balzac’s Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes, published in 1897, Gautier’s Émaux et camées and Oscar Wilde’s Salomé; he also illustrated works by Gustave Flaubert and contributed to the journal Le Monde moderne. Paintings held at the Musée des Ursulines de Mâcon include La Mort de Roland, dated 1893, and Salammbô, an oil painting on canvas from 1920 given to the museum by the family in 1937. The Musée des Ursulines also holds a group of his works. Bussière was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur on 3 February 1917. His work was the subject of an exhibition catalogue published by the Musées de Mâcon in 2009, under the direction of Marie Lapalus, with Benoît Mahuet.
