Gustave Mascart (1834–1914), a French painter born in Valenciennes and deceased in Paris, is associated with realistic urban landscapes, particularly views of Paris and its surroundings. According to a biography devoted to him, he was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager. The subjects mentioned are not limited to the capital: Mascart also depicted Amsterdam, Como, Ghent and Ostend, as well as the windmills of Kinderdijk. These places form an extensive geographical repertoire, although the available information does not make it possible to specify the circumstances in which they were depicted.
A work entitled “Wäscherinnen am Fluss bei einer Stadtbrücke” is described as an oil on canvas, signed lower right and measuring 33 × 41 cm. An advertisement attributes to Mascart, under the pseudonym Taverny, an oil on wood depicting a promenade at the foot of Bruges’ Powder Tower, dated around 1900. The inscription at lower right locates the motif in Bruges; the use of this pseudonym is, however, noted as poorly documented.
This profile brings together identity references for Gustave Mascart and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
