Friedrich Schaper (1869–1956) was a German painter and graphic artist born in Brunswick and raised in Hamburg. After training as a decorative painter, he attended art schools in Hamburg and Berlin. Encouraged by Alfred Lichtwark, director of the Kunsthalle, he returned to Hamburg in 1894. In 1897 he helped establish the Hamburgischer Künstlerclub, which contributed to the renewal of painting within the city’s artistic community.
Schaper painted landscapes, urban scenes and portraits. Hamburg and northern Germany supplied many subjects; he also worked regularly on Sylt after military service during the First World War. Alongside his own practice, he taught drawing and joined the Landeskunstschule in 1925. His career therefore combined observation of local places with participation in collective artistic life and a sustained commitment to teaching.
This profile brings together identity references for Friedrich Schaper and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
