Sava Sekulić began painting in 1932, but did not devote himself to it full time until 1962, when he retired. Before then, he worked, among other occupations, as an agricultural labourer, carpenter, bricklayer and boatman. His work evolved from landscapes and figures from his native region, treated in a realist style, towards compositions in which imagination played a greater role. Jabucilo and Momcilo (1974) is held at the Museum of Naïve Art in Jagodina, while Napoleon and His Generals is included in the collection of the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art.
Several works are also noted in exhibitions at the Galerie St Étienne in New York: Knees and Elbows, dated 1979, and The Musicians, dated 1986. The recorded solo exhibitions include a presentation in Belgrade in 1969, followed by one at the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art in Zagreb in 1976; they continued in Munich in 1984 and at Galerie Susanne Zander in Cologne in 1988. The biographical list also mentions solo exhibitions in Aranđelovac, Paris and Jagodina, among other cities. In 2015, CCC – Sava Sekulić Self-Taught was presented at the Zander Collection in Bönnigheim. The book Sava Sekulić, by Günter Karl Bose and Charlotte Zander, was published in Berlin by Brinkmann & Bose in 1993.
This profile brings together identity references for Sava Sekulić and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
