Friedrich Kallmorgen, a German painter born in Altona in 1856 and deceased in Grötzingen in 1924, trained at several academies before teaching in Karlsruhe and later in Berlin. He received his first drawing lessons from his uncle Theodor Kuchel in 1862–1863, then entered the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts in 1875, where he studied with Andreas Müller, Ernst Deger and Eugen Dücker. He continued his training in Karlsruhe, first with Ernst Hildebrand and then with Hans Fredrik Gude. During the summer of 1878, he made study visits to Blankenburg, in the Harz, and to the Lüneburg Heath; in 1880, he followed Gude to Berlin, before returning to Karlsruhe the following year and completing his studies in Gustav Schönleber’s circle.
Travel accompanied these years of training and early professional activity: with Schönleber and Hermann Baisch, Kallmorgen travelled, among other places, to France, Belgium and Holland. He married the painter Margarethe Hormuth in 1882 and, four years later, became assistant professor in Schönleber’s still-life class. Settling in Grötzingen in 1888, he is described as one of the founders of the Grötzingen School. Appointed professor by Grand Duke Frederick of Baden in 1891, he served as president of the Karlsruhe Artists’ Association from 1896 to 1898. During the decade, his travels took him, among other places, to Paris, Brussels and Rotterdam, as well as to Italy and the Netherlands; in 1898, he also undertook a journey to the countries of northern Europe. His work also included designing collectible images for the Cologne chocolate manufacturer Ludwig Stollwerck.
In 1901, Kallmorgen succeeded Eugen Bracht as professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. Between 1903 and 1916, he travelled to Norway, Russia and Flanders. From 1918, based in Heidelberg, he worked as an independent artist until his death. A work entitled *Hamburger Werftbetrieb* is described as oil on canvas, measuring 41 × 52 cm, signed “F. Kallmorgen” at the lower right. A label on the reverse associates it with the Nachlass Professor Kallmorgen, Heidelberg, and gives the title of the painting.
