Born in Bruges in 1523 and deceased in Florence in 1605, Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus, worked mainly in Italy for the Medici. A painter and designer of tapestries, he collaborated with Giorgio Vasari and devised hunting scenes for the villa at Poggio a Caiano. His compositions were sent to Antwerp workshops to become prints, requiring a distinction between their designer and the engravers who executed them.
Allegory of the Course of Human Life at the Metropolitan Museum, dated 1570 or earlier, prepares a series engraved by Petrus Jalhea Furnius and published by Hieronymus Cock. It develops an earlier tapestry project. Cooper Hewitt holds 143 sheets of drawings and inscriptions. These illuminate a graphic production ranging from religious narratives to inventions, whose models circulated as far as Asia and the Americas.
This profile brings together identity references for Stradanus and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
