A painter and manuscript illuminator from Siena, Sano di Pietro directed a workshop producing devotional images. At the Metropolitan Museum, a Madonna and Child surrounded by saints, painted around 1465–1470, combines tempera with a gold ground; the Child holds a goldfinch. Another Madonna in the same museum, dating from about 1450, brings the faces of mother and son together in an affectionate gesture.
The National Gallery of Art in Washington preserves a composition of around 1460–1470 uniting the Virgin, Jerome, Bernardino and four angels. Here too, the figures appear against gold. The Royal Collection panel, with two saints and six angels, belongs to his workshop’s production without being securely attributed to his own hand. This distinction reflects the collective nature of that painting practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Sano di Pietro and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
