Eugène Galien-Laloue

Born : 1854Died : 1941Documented citizenships : France

Eugène Galien-Laloue’s urban scenes are distinguished by their attention to seasonal changes: the sky, trees and lighting change, while pavements made wet by rain or snow give the streets a particular atmosphere. A pupil of Léon Germain Pelouse, a painter associated with the Barbizon School, he was influenced by it without himself belonging to the school.

His career includes early exhibitions: an exhibition of his works at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims is recorded in 1876, with Quai aux Fleurs, sous la neige; he then showed two paintings and two gouaches at the 1877 Salon, including En Normandie. His work on railway lines led him to paint the surrounding landscapes and then the neighbourhoods of Paris, producing a large number of gouaches of the latter. His repertoire was not limited to the capital: he also painted landscapes of Normandy, Seine-et-Marne, Marseille, Italy and Venice. At the beginning of the First World War, not having been mobilised, he made numerous drawings and watercolours of military scenes in 1914.

The Musée Carnavalet in Paris holds L’église Saint-Augustin sous la neige. Works by the artist are also listed in the collections of the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia, as well as in the museums of La Rochelle, Louviers, Mulhouse and Reims. In 1999, Noé Willer published a catalogue raisonné devoted to the artist, entitled Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941), le triomphe de Paris.
