Josef Navrátil, a decorative painter, first trained under his father and then continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His many trips abroad took him to Switzerland, among other places. Early mural decorations cited by the sources include works at Prague Castle, the Postal Museum in Liběchov, Ploskovice and Jirny, where there is an Alpine Room. His work comprises landscapes, still lifes, figurative paintings and sketches.
Between 1850 and 1853, with the help of assistants, he decorated twenty rooms in Zákupy Castle: the ensembles combined history paintings and genre scenes, ornaments and allegorical compositions. In 1850, he became president of the Union of Artists. According to an expert assessment by PhDr. Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová reproduced in a sales listing, Navrátil worked from sketches and executed the final works in his studio. The first complete retrospective of his work was held posthumously at the Rudolfinum in 1909.
This profile brings together identity references for Josef Navrátil and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
