Innocenzo da Imola, also known as Innocenzo Francucci, developed a religious painting practice attentive to Raphael’s models. His career connected Imola with Bologna, where he received substantial commissions. The Madonna with Saints Cassian and Peter Chrysologus in the San Domenico museum, painted around 1515–1520, was a gift to his home city in gratitude for its support of his studies in Bologna.
For the high altar of San Michele in Bosco, he produced a monumental composition around 1522 in which the archangel follows a model by Raphael. The Getty’s Study of an Angel and of Drapery, about 1520, reveals another stage of his work: black chalk, brown wash and white highlights model fabric on prepared paper. A second, smaller study revises the folds of the figure’s garment.
This profile brings together identity references for Innocenzo di Pietro Francucci da Imola and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
