Franz Kamlander

Born : 1920Died : 1999Documented citizenships : Austria

The recurring presence of animals, and especially cows, distinguishes the work of Franz Kamlander, produced at the Haus der Künstler in Gugging over nearly twenty years. He often drew a small cow each day, varying the colours: yellow, red or blue. This focus echoes his childhood on a farm, where he worked alongside his family and formed a close bond with the animals. According to Galerie Gugging, he drew animals of all kinds from memory, both in naturalistic forms and in animal visions. Museum Gugging notes that each of his depictions has an individual character, perceptible in particular when comparing two canvases of the same format.

Born in 1920 in Hainburg, Austria, Kamlander lived at the Haus der Künstler in Gugging from 1981 until his death in 1999. It was there that his artistic career, spanning nearly twenty years, unfolded. In 1990, he received the Oskar-Kokoschka-Preis together with the group of Gugging artists.

Museum Gugging presents two of his works on canvas and describes a reduced palette and a characteristic stylised signature arranged over three lines. Among the documented works is *Kuh*, dated 1996 and made with charcoal, watercolour and wax crayon on paper. An untitled work from 1988, described in a sales notice, combines watercolour and coloured grease pencil on heavy paper; it measures 43.8 × 62 cm. His works are held, among other places, in the Hannah Rieger Collection in Austria and the Helmut Zambo Collection in Germany.
