Tran Phuc Duyen

Born : 1923Died : 1993Documented citizenships : France · Vietnam

Trần Phúc Duyên (1923–1993), a Vietnamese artist born in Hanoi, worked as a lacquer artist in Hanoi; his studio received private commissions. Views of Vietnam occupy an important place in his work. Over time, his compositions became less descriptive and moved further towards abstraction; empty spaces, surfaces and transitions between tones grew increasingly important within them.

At the end of 1954, he went to France and attended Jean Souverbie’s studio at the École des beaux-arts de Paris; despite difficulties obtaining lacquer materials, he continued his explorations. An exhibition organised in Nice in 1961 presented his lacquer works as well as his silk paintings; in 1963, he exhibited at the Club des 4 Vents in Paris. From the end of 1968, he lived in Switzerland and continued to exhibit there, notably in Bern and Neuchâtel; he died there in 1993.

This profile brings together identity references for Tran Phuc Duyen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
