Giorgos Gounaropoulos

Died : 1977Documented citizenships : Greece

Originally from Sozopol, Giorgos Gounaropoulos, also known as Gounaro, studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts before travelling to Paris in 1919. He attended the Académie Julian and Grande Chaumière, then settled permanently again in Athens in 1931. His academic training gradually opened towards a personal language of linear figures and dreamlike light.

Women, rocks, flowers and seascapes form a world in which different shapes seem to inhabit a shared poetic space. Drawing and the interplay of shadow structure this painting informed by ancient models. Gounaropoulos also illustrated poetry collections and painted murals for Athens City Hall. He died in 1977. His house and studio became a museum in 1979 after his son donated the building and artworks to the municipality of Zografou.
