German painter Herbert Helmert, born in Dresden in 1924 and deceased in Munich in 1997, followed a path of training and work that took him from Saxony to Berlin and then to Munich. After completing his schooling in Meißen, he learned porcelain painting at the Meissen manufactory. However, recommendations from his teachers enabled him to begin studying painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts at the age of sixteen. In Dresden, he met the actress Erika Stamer, who would become his wife; in 1944, they moved to Berlin together. In 1951, Helmert resumed his studies at the Hochschule für die Bildenden Künste in Berlin, in Max Kaus’s class, before becoming a master student of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff until 1954. From 1965, he lived and worked in Munich. The consulted biographical entry links several stays in France, between 1965 and 1968, to this period; these stays marked his artistic development.
The recorded exhibitions trace several stages in his career: presentations in Dresden in 1945–1946, in Meißen in 1947, and then in Chemnitz and Freiberg in 1950; the list also mentions Galerie A. Schumacher in Munich in 1968 and the Europäische Wochen at Schloss Vornbach in 1981. Among the works cited is Bildnis der Schauspielerin E. H., an oil painting shown at the 1950 exhibition in Chemnitz. A sale catalogue entry describes Landschaft im Morgenlicht, dated 1976, as an oil painting on fibreboard measuring 116 × 80.5 cm. The work bears a monogram at the upper right and an inscription on the reverse locating it in Munich. Rosenstrauss is also described in a sale catalogue entry: this oil painting on fibreboard, signed and dated 1978 on the reverse, measures 60 × 50 cm.
This profile brings together identity references for Herbert Helmert and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
