Edward Cucuel

Born : 1875Died : 1951Documented citizenships : United States

American Impressionist painter and illustrator Edward Cucuel was born in San Francisco in 1875. His career brought press illustration and painting together at an early stage, spanning artistic training, travels in Europe and a move to Munich. At fourteen, he enrolled at the San Francisco School of Design, then worked for the newspaper The Observer. His beginnings as a press illustrator preceded a path that led him to develop his painting further.

At seventeen, he went to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts, where he worked, among others, under Benjamin Jean-Joseph Constant, William Bouguereau and Jean Leon Gérôme. In 1896, he returned to the United States and resumed press illustration in New York. Back in Europe, he settled in Paris for two years before travelling to study works by Old Masters. His travels took him to France, Italy and then Germany, where he resumed working as an illustrator in Berlin.

After settling in Munich in 1907, Cucuel joined the artists’ group Scholle, led by Leo Putz. He returned to paint near Putz for several summers; Putz’s influence on his work is noted in the artist’s biography. By 1913 at the latest, his paintings were being shown at Paris salons, and some works were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1915, he received a silver medal for a work presented at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Collections cited as holding works by Cucuel include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Institute and the Detroit Art Institute.
