Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574), a painter, architect and writer from Arezzo, combined artistic creation with the writing of its history. First published in 1550, his Lives of the Artists appeared in an enlarged second edition in 1568, with portraits and indexes. His Portrait of Lorenzo de’ Medici, painted around 1533–1534 and held by the Uffizi, also constructs a dynastic memory: the sitter is commemorated after his death at the request of his political heirs. Latin inscriptions also give the portrait an allegorical dimension.
Saint Luke in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, belongs to a series commissioned by Pope Pius V for a Vatican chapel. This oil painting on panel, executed in 1570–1571, shows the evangelist drawing or painting beside his winged ox.
