The German painter Siegward Sprotte, born in 1913 and died in 2004, is described as having first been a private pupil of Adolf Dahle. In 1938, he took part in the Berlin exhibition of the Grand State Prize, according to the biographical entry by Auktionshaus Mehlis. The same entry places him in Potsdam-Bornstedt until 1945, then mentions stays divided between this locality, his studio in Kampen on the island of Sylt, and Berlin. It also notes regular stays in Italy, France, the United States and Portugal. In 2003, he was made an honorary citizen of Potsdam.
The documented works attest to varied practices and formats: a watercolour on paper, signed and dated 1977, bears the title «Meditation am Meer». The colour screenprint «Sylt», dated 1975 and numbered 572/800, is described as an abstract depiction of a coastal strip. In 1994, «Farbfolgen schaffen Landschaft» brought together seven screenprints with collotype in a box, on wove paper.
The exhibitions recorded include a presentation at Galerie Sieglinde Dietz in Potsdam from February to March 2000, as well as an exhibition at the Eleonore Austerer Gallery in San Francisco in February of the same year. The artist-info database also records an exhibition at Potsdam Museum – Forum für Kunst und Geschichte, from September to November 2001. It also includes Sprotte among the artists in «Lieblingsorte – Künstlerkolonien von Worpswede bis Hiddensee», presented at the Gustav-Lübcke-Museum from December 2016 to May 2017.
