Born in 1962 in Xalapa (also spelled Jalapa), Mexico, Gabriel Orozco is a Mexican artist whose practice unfolds between art and the realities of everyday life. He is the son of mural painter Mario Orozco Rivera.
He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas from 1981 to 1984, then moved to Madrid in 1986 and attended the Círculo de Bellas Artes. After his training in Mexico, he moved away from the academic framework and spent a year at a Spanish school.
Movement becomes a recurring element in his work: his travels and the places he encounters inform his practice. Orozco states that he does not have a fixed studio and works wherever he lives, a way of creating that engages with the environments through which he passes.
His work explores the boundaries between art and everyday life, bringing together geometry, organic materials and elements of chance. These concerns are expressed through gestures and objects that situate his work in concrete situations.
In Turista Maluco (1991), he places an orange on each of the stalls in a market after the vendors have left. The intervention introduces the same object in the market’s varied locations and makes the ordinary arrangement of the stalls the framework for the work.
With DS, in 1993, he transforms a car by removing its central section: the vehicle is cut lengthwise into three equal parts, then the middle third is removed. The alteration directly affects the form of an everyday object and recomposes its proportions.
Between 2000 and 2005, the Working Tables bring together objects accumulated on tables. This series extends the attention paid to ordinary things, here assembled in a working configuration.
In September 1993, Orozco presents his first solo exhibition in the United States at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He participates in the Venice Biennale in 1993, 2003, 2005 and 2017, as well as in Documenta in 1997 and 2002.
From 2009 to 2011, a retrospective devoted to his work travels from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Centre Pompidou and Tate Modern.
His activity also extends to the design of gardens and public projects. Completed in 2016 after nearly three years of work, the Orozco Garden at the South London Gallery is his first garden design. In 2019, he is invited to design and coordinate the master plan for Chapultepec Park; in February 2023, he celebrates the completion of Calzada flotante (Floating Causeway), presented as his first public architectural project in Mexico.
