The Austrian painter and draughtsman Josef Danilowatz (1877–1945), born and died in Vienna, developed a practice combining press drawing, caricature and technical illustration. His training at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Siegmund L’Allemand and William Unger preceded his work as a graphic artist and caricaturist for the weekly Die Muskete.
From 1919, he also produced caricatures for Der Götz von Berlichingen, a satirical magazine published in Vienna. His work for these periodicals places part of his activity within the illustrated press, where drawing and caricature are recurring forms of expression. His subjects were not, however, limited to the press: he frequently stayed in Trieste, where he drew ships and port facilities. His interest in technical subjects also found expression in illustrations devoted to this field, thus linking the observation of infrastructure and objects with his drawing practice.
Several catalogued works offer an overview of the range of subjects and techniques associated with his name. Im Bazar (Turkey), an oil on wood signed and dated 1922, bears an artist’s label on the reverse; The Bookseller, dated 1921, is described as an oil on panel. A lithograph entitled Brickworks at Heiligenstadt completes these examples. After his death, he was assigned a grave of honour at Döbling Cemetery in Vienna. In 1955, a street in the Viennese districts of Meidling and Liesing was named in his honour.
