Edmond Demirdjian (1951–2009), a Bulgarian artist and musician, graduated in mural painting from Sofia’s Academy of Arts in 1978. His practice included painting, drawing, collage and graphic arts. Between 1994 and 1998 he divided his activity between Bulgaria and the United States; he received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 1995.
His figure compositions, interiors and still lifes evolved from rigorous construction towards grotesque Expressionist scenes, followed by a growing influence of Abstract Expressionism after 1987. Colour and rhythm play an essential role in this work. His everyday drawings form an autonomous body of work rather than merely preliminary studies. After his death, the Sofia City Art Gallery paid tribute with an exhibition bringing together early works and late pieces.
