SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Dietrich Hermann Edzard, known as Dietz Edzard, was a German painter, engraver and illustrator, born in Bremen in 1893 and died in Paris in 1963. In 1911, he worked in Berlin under the direction of Max Beckmann.
After settling in Bavaria and then Lithuania, he left the latter in 1927 to emigrate to Paris; he first lived on Rue du Sabot before settling in Provence. His career includes an exhibition in Amsterdam in 1920. In 1929, at the Jeu de Paume, he presented three etchings as part of the Exposition des peintres-graveurs contemporains: Couple couché, Deux têtes and Cierges allumés.
The Art Institute of Chicago lists a work from 1923, A Gentle Creature: A Fantastic Story (Die Sanfte: Eine Phantastische Erzählung). Illustrations for The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky are also attributed to him.
