Rāghib ʻAyyād, also known as Ragheb Ayad (1892–1982), belonged to the first intake of the Cairo School of Fine Arts, studying there from 1908 to 1911. He continued his training in Rome and taught at several Egyptian schools. From 1950 to 1955 he directed the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art.
His painting attends to rural and popular practices: markets, agricultural work, cafés and everyday traditions. The rhythms of his figures sometimes recall ancient Egyptian compositions. In Aswan, a work from the 1960s in the Barjeel Art Foundation, labourers helping to construct the High Dam continue this attention to manual work. The modern construction site thus joins the human activities that run through his genre scenes.
This profile brings together identity references for Ragheb Ayad and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
