Julius Caesar Ibbetson, who was born in 1759 and died in 1817, developed much of his training by copying Dutch masters. He worked in oil and watercolour, painted theatrical scenery and published Painting in Oil in 1803. His landscapes make room for everyday activities: Llangollen shows women spinning and winding wool outside the church of Saint Collen.
His Caernarvon Castle of 1792 accompanied a journey through north and west Wales, when the monument was already a ruin. His compositions also circulated through prints. Landing a Cargo, an aquatint and etching made in 1797 by John Wells after Ibbetson, depicts barrels being unloaded on a beach among boats, connecting a coastal subject with human labour.
