Pieter van Bredael, also known as Peeter or Pierre, was an Antwerp painter of populated landscapes. His Italianate compositions place markets, travellers and animals among buildings inspired by antiquity. The Landscape with Market Scene in Bruges, dated around 1680, adopts an elevated viewpoint. An obelisk catches the eye between the buildings, while mountains enclose the distant horizon.
In the National Trust's large Market Scene amidst Ruins, dated to the 1660s, trading takes place on the right and peasants dance outside a tavern on the left. Cattle Market in Italy at the Hunterian, attributed to Bredael, includes a circular building based on the Temple of Vesta in Rome. These paintings bring the spectacle of everyday exchange into an architectural setting assembled from different elements.
