Lorenzo Delleani (1840–1908), trained at Turin's Accademia Albertina, gradually moved from history painting towards landscape. His small outdoor studies could prepare more expansive compositions: Veduta dell'Aja (1885), an oil on canvas in the Museo Revoltella, develops an impression recorded during his journey to the Netherlands in 1883.
Small formats make his treatment of paint particularly tangible. In Paesaggio grigio (1890), held by the Museo Borgogna, palette knife work, thick brushstrokes and incisions in wet pigment suggest vegetation beneath a threatening sky. Parts of the support remain exposed. Paesaggio (1887), in Milan's Gallerie d'Italia, is an oil on wood measuring just 23.6 by 36.5 centimetres. Torrente di maggio, dated 22 May 1901 and held in Vercelli, continues this practice of painting on small wooden panels.
This profile brings together identity references for Lorenzo Delleani and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
