Andrea di Giusto, also called Andrea da Firenze, belongs to early fifteenth-century Florentine painting. Trained with Bicci di Lorenzo, he worked alongside Masaccio in Pisa in 1426. His work brings together models associated with Lorenzo Monaco and Fra Angelico. The polyptych completed in 1435, now at Prato’s Palazzo Pretorio, combines the Virgin, several saints, an Annunciation and narrative scenes in its predella.
The Assumption with Saints Jerome and Francis at the Philbrook Museum, dated around 1423, is painted in tempera on lindenwood. The Walters Art Museum’s Madonna and Child Enthroned, around 1450, was probably intended for domestic devotion. In this tempera and gold-leaf panel, the Child holds a globe; the figures’ poses recall Fra Angelico’s Madonna of the Shadows.
This profile brings together identity references for Andrea di Giusto and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
