Cornelius Völker, born in Kronach in 1965, is a German painter trained at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He teaches painting at the Kunstakademie Münster. His work revisits still life and portraiture to investigate the history and possibilities of representational painting, using subjects that are often familiar or overlooked.
Hair, hands, food, glassware, medicines and cigarette ends form a repertoire in which the body appears either directly or through its traces. Fluid yet precise handling, vivid colours and the treatment of subjects in series bring these motifs towards the boundary between figuration and abstraction. In 2023–2024, Düsseldorf’s Kunstpalast devoted a retrospective to his work, bringing together eighty-five oil paintings and fifty works on paper from different phases of his career.
This profile brings together identity references for Cornelius Völker and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
