Juan de Juanes

Born : 1503Died : 1579

Juan de Juanes, also known as Joan de Joanes, is presented as the founder of the Valencian School. He was born under the name Vicente Juan Masip and belonged to a Valencian artistic milieu. Trained in Valencia in the workshop of his father, the painter Vicente Masip, he undertook his first independent work in 1534, with the commission for an altarpiece of Saint Eligius for the church of Santa Catalina. The biographical note describes a practice devoted primarily to religious painting and reports that he conceived of painting as an act of devotion.

Among the works mentioned are the Saviour with the Host and Chalice, held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, and the Immaculate Conception. His oeuvre also includes a Portrait of Alfonso V of Aragon dated 1557 and listed at the museum in Zaragoza, as well as an Assumption of the Virgin dated 1578. The attribution of some works to Juan de Juanes or his father, Vicente Masip, remains uncertain. According to the note, the Prado Museum holds eighteen paintings by the artist. Juan de Juanes died in Bocairente on 21 December 1579.
