Ernst Fuchs

Ernst Fuchs, an Austrian artist born and deceased in Vienna (1930–2015), was one of the founders of what would become known as the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. At the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, which he entered in 1945, he first studied under Robin Christian Andersen, then joined Albert Paris von Gütersloh’s class. There he met Arik Brauer, Rudolf Hausner, Wolfgang Hutter and Anton Lehmden, with whom he later founded this movement.
In 1957, he travelled to the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion and began work on a monumental Last Supper. This period also included a commission for three altar paintings on parchment: the cycle of the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, created from 1958 to 1961 for the Church of the Rosary in Hetzendorf, Vienna. In 1972, he acquired Otto Wagner’s villa in Hütteldorf, which was then in a state of disrepair, and subsequently restored and remodelled it. From 1974 onwards, he designed sets and costumes for operas by Mozart and Richard Wagner, including The Magic Flute, Parsifal and Lohengrin.
In 1993, the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg dedicated a retrospective to him. A sale catalogue entry describes Kircheninneres as a charcoal drawing on paper, signed and dated 1971, measuring 26 × 35 cm; it mentions a Galerie Krugier label on the reverse and provenance from the artist’s studio.
