Pieter Bout is primarily concerned with landscape, which he develops through views of cities, villages, harbours, beaches and rivers. His paintings often include lively scenes, such as village festivities and people enjoying themselves on the ice; he also paints Italianate landscapes in the manner of Nicolaes Berchem. His teachers are unknown. An early work is dated 1664, before his admission as a master to the Brussels Guild of Saint Luke in 1671.
According to the article, Bout is said to have worked in Paris around 1675–1677 and to have frequently collaborated there with Adriaen Frans Boudewyns, although this is not confirmed by primary sources. He returned to Brussels in 1677 and remained active there until the end of his career. The article also indicates that he probably travelled to the United Provinces and Italy. His drawings and etchings take up subjects and stylistic approaches similar to those of his paintings.
A collaboration with Lucas Smout illustrates the division of roles between the two painters: Bout paints a beach and harbour view, while Smout paints the figures. The work, known by the title Harbour and Fish Market and held at the Musée des beaux-arts de Quimper, may depict Scheveningen. The Rijksmuseum also attributes a religious painting entitled The Adoration of the Shepherds to Bout.
