Trento Longaretti

Born : 1916Died : 2017Documented citizenships : Italy

The Italian painter Trento Longaretti, born in Treviglio, in the province of Bergamo, in 1916 and died in Bergamo in 2017, developed a body of work spanning several disciplines, from painting and graphic arts to fresco, mosaic and stained glass. Resuming in 1945, his activity is also marked by a shift from informal artistic research towards figuration intended, according to the artist’s presentation, to make the symbolic message of his paintings accessible.

He trained at the art high school in Milan, then enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic and at the Brera Academy, where he studied under Aldo Carpi. He began exhibiting in 1936, at the Littoriali dell’arte and in group exhibitions in Milan, Genoa and Bergamo; in 1939, he received the Milyus and Stanga prizes. At that time, he was associated with the Corrente group. The war, during which he was in Slovenia, Sicily and Albania, almost entirely interrupted his artistic activity.

The Galleria La Rotonda in Bergamo devoted its first solo exhibition to him in 1943. He was invited to the Venice Biennale in 1942, and took part again in 1948, 1950 and 1956; in 1952, he was also invited to the Rome Quadriennale. That same year, he won the national competition for the position of director and professor of painting at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo. He taught there until 1978, having succeeded Achille Funi. Exhibitions devoted to his work include two presentations on the theme of “Mothers”, at the Palazzo della Ragione in Bergamo and the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. The Society for Fine Arts and the Permanent Exhibition in Milan organised an anthological exhibition in 1980; in 1993, the Fondazione Corrente presented “Trento Longaretti. Disegni degli anni di Corrente”. In September 2001, the Jewish Museum of Venice hosted “The Jewish Imagination of Trento Longaretti”.

The gallery notes that works by Longaretti are held at the Museum of Modern Art in Basel, the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo and the Abbey of Le Bouveret in Switzerland. The gallery’s bibliography also cites G. Della Pergola’s book, “L'ebraismo immaginario di Trento Longaretti”, published in Cremona in 2001. An auction catalogue also describes a work entitled “Mädchen mit Schal” as watercolour and pencil, signed lower right, measuring 31.5 × 20 cm.
