Wilhelm Brücke
Wilhelm Brücke (1800–1874), also known as Johann Wilhelm Brücke, was a German painter trained at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. The son of a goldsmith, he pursued an artistic career like his two brothers. He initially specialised in architectural views and became known for his depictions of Berlin before broadening his repertoire to include Italian landscape.
His stays in Italy, from 1829 to 1834 and again from 1839 to 1840, accompanied this development. Landscape with Rural People on the Gulf of Salerno, an oil on canvas measuring 78 by 112 centimetres, exemplifies this interest. The painting was exhibited at the Dresden art exhibition in 1861 and listed by Friedrich von Boetticher in his study of nineteenth-century painting, published in 1891.
