Christian Ludwig Attersee

Christian Ludwig Attersee pursues an activity that extends beyond the visual arts: a musician, writer, object maker, designer, scenographer and filmmaker, he also owes his pseudonym to sailing, a discipline in which he is among Austria’s leading athletes. Based in Austria from 1944, he spends his youth in Aschach, near Linz, and on the shores of Lake Attersee in Upper Austria; the biographical source states that he lives in Vienna and Semmering, in Lower Austria.
He completes his painting studies with Eduard Bäumer in 1963. After an initial period focused on object art and action, drawings and panel paintings assume a characteristic place in his work, which engages with sexuality and the experience of nature. One description characterises his works as figurative, often symbolic, with vivid colours and a dynamic brushstroke. Among the documented works, Erweiterte Woge, dated 1985, is a mixed-media work on paper, signed, dated and titled.
In 1984, Attersee represents Austria at the Venice Biennale. From 1990 to 2009, he teaches at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he is Professor of Painting, Animation Film and Tapestry.
