Alexander Brantingham Simpson

Sale notices place Alexander Brantingham Simpson as a British artist active from 1904 to 1931. The listed works attest to a practice that included watercolour, oil on panel and, in a group of portraits, pastel. Several watercolours are described as signed: “Interesting deeds”, whose title appears on the inner frame, and “The Message” or “A Missing Quote”. “The Joy of Life” is also described as signed, with the date 1917 inscribed on the reverse. The titles and descriptions indicate a range of subjects: young lovers in a formal garden, courting couples in “Philanderers”, and “Venus and Cupid beside an apple tree”, a work in oil on panel. “The Reaper” and “Nudes amongst trees” are likewise catalogued as signed watercolours.

A group of three portraits of eighteenth-century artists at work, executed in watercolour and pastel, broadens this range of subjects. “Ye Nymphs and Sylvan Gods” is attributed to Simpson in a notice that reports, on the basis of an inscription on the reverse, an exhibition at the Royal Academy in London in 1912, under number 539.
