Ippolito Caffi (1809–1866), born in Belluno and trained at the Venice Academy, renewed the painting of urban views in the nineteenth century. In Rome and during journeys through Italy, Greece and the Near East, he observed monuments, people and changing light. He made drawings and small studies on location, subsequently developing them in the studio. This method combined close observation with an investigation of atmospheric effects.
His views of Venice and Rome explore night scenes, festive illuminations and contrasts between natural and artificial light. Involved in the Risorgimento movements, he also depicted events he witnessed, including the bombardment of Marghera. He died in 1866 when the Re d’Italia sank during the Battle of Lissa, having joined the vessel to document the military operations through his drawings.
This profile brings together identity references for Ippolito Caffi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
