Karl Christian Sparmann (1805–1864), also known as Carl Christian Sparmann, was born in Hintermauer near Meissen. He received his first instruction from the porcelain painter Johann Samuel Arnhold before becoming a pupil of the landscape painter Johan Christian Dahl in Dresden in 1822. This training established his lasting interest in the study of natural scenery.
He taught drawing to Queen Hortense and her son Louis-Napoléon at Arenenberg and also worked as a teacher in Lenzburg. Stays in Switzerland and Italy informed his landscape practice alongside Saxon subjects. The Alps occupy an important place in his repertoire: Die Wetterhörner in der Schweiz dates from 1838, while Am St. Gotthard in der Schweiz, nach der Natur aufgenommen is dated 1861. His later career continued in Dresden.
