Marwan Kassab-Bachi

Born in Damascus in 1934 and deceased in Berlin in 2016, Marwan Kassab Bachi, known as Marwan, developed a career closely tied to the German capital, where he arrived in 1957 and subsequently remained. From 1957 to 1963, he studied painting there at the School of Fine Arts under Professor Hann Trier. He later returned to the school as a professor of painting, a position he held from 1980 to 2002.

Among the works identified in public collections is Homme au gilet vert, dated 1967 and held at the National Museum of Modern Art. Another documented reference is Ohne Titel (Kopf), a 1976 canvas executed in oil and tempera, measuring 97 × 130 cm and signed and dated “Marwan 76”. The published provenance of this work lists Galerie Timm Gierig in Frankfurt, followed by a private collection in Italy. It is also recorded in the exhibition Marwan held at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt in 1984, as catalogue number 31, with a colour reproduction.

Marwan became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1994 and was made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2005.

This profile brings together identity references for Marwan Kassab-Bachi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.

24 references are documented at Lempertz. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
