Sabina Mirri

Born in 1957.

Italian, of Swiss-German origin · the artist describes herself as Swiss-Roman · Post-Transavanguardia · Roman San Lorenzo milieu · Neo-Expressionist and Neo-Romantic figuration · multidisciplinary contemporary art

Sabina Mirri is an Italian artist whose practice brings together painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and installation. She trained at the Liceo Artistico in Rome, where she studied painting with Giulio Turcato, and made an early debut in 1976 with a solo exhibition at Galleria La Margherita. In the early 1980s, she took part in the events devoted by Achille Bonito Oliva to Post-Transavanguardia and moved within the Roman milieu associated with the artists of San Lorenzo, including Marco Tirelli, Giuseppe Gallo, Gianni Dessì, Luca Sanjust and Patrizia Cantalupo.

In 1983, she exhibited at the Trigonbiennale in Graz and presented the solo exhibition «Quadri 1981-1983» at A.A.M. Architettura Arte Moderna. She subsequently settled in New York, where she produced large works on paper in intense colours and joined the circle of the Annina Nosei Gallery, which devoted a solo exhibition to her in 1984.

In 1985, she took part in the XIII Biennale de Paris, the XVIII São Paulo Biennial and the exhibition «A New Romanticism» at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington. Since the mid-1990s, she has lived and worked in Petrolo, near Mercatale Valdarno, while maintaining close ties with Rome. Her work brings together personal memory, literary and artistic references, familiar objects, introspection and irony.

Drawing remains the generative core of a practice in which images emerge through layers, erasures and transformations. Recent projects such as «Studiolo» have given this research an environmental dimension, bringing together works, objects and autobiographical traces in a deliberately mobile and provisional inventory.

The works by Sabina Mirri presented by Swiss Art Gallery extend this artistic journey and take their place naturally within this corpus.
